About wedding officiant
Richard Meyer

sonoma county wedding officiant

Reverend Meyer, a wedding officiant for more than 30 years, is the ideal celebrant for your wedding in the beautiful Wine Country of Sonoma County, California. His ceremonies—both classic and bespoke—joyfully reflect the bride and groom's love for each other and provide a foundation of relaxed stability to one of the most important events in your life, all amidst the backdrop of some of Northern California's, and indeed the world's, most spectacular scenery–Sonoma County's own Wine Country.

A modern spiritualist with a background in Christian ministry, Reverend Meyer is a wedding officiant capable and confident in performing ceremonies that range from traditional and religious to spiritual, non-denominational or 100% custom. Innate creativity and flexibility set Reverend Richard Meyer apart from other wedding officiants, ensuring that each individual couple's unique attributes and love for one another are highlighted. He can make suggestions and offer wedding vow options, or provide guidance to couples wishing to write their own vows.

In a region where pickup trucks are no more out of place than limousines, where world class wines are crafted and stellar micro beers are brewed, where the rugged ocean crashes at the feet of immaculate vineyards and manicured gardens, Reverend Meyer blends perfectly–a mix of organic, classic, humorous, knowledgeable, downhome luxury–this wedding officiant is, quite simply, a Sonoma County Wine Country gem.

With a wedding history spanning the coasts and inlets of California and Hawaii, Reverend Meyer's love of Sonoma County is evident in his ceremonial style, and the Wine Country serves as a perfect backdrop to his touching services. His confident, heartfelt ceremonies are now performed across Sonoma, Napa, Marin, Mendocino and Lake Counties. He has lovingly presided over the vows of two of his three adult daughters, and shows the same respect and care to each of the couples he has the honor to stand with.

Julie and Richard Meyer

"Richard and I have been married since 1975, and are proud to have called California's Wine Country our home since 1987. We've raised our children here, and now have the privilege of watching our grandchildren experience the wonder of Sonoma County.

In all the years we've been married, Dick has never wavered in his incredible dedication to others, his thoughtfulness, his care. This is evidenced not just in the way he approaches people, but in his love of animals and gardening.

He brings out the best in people and has a wonderful, calming effect in stressful situations. These are reasons he has been a tremendous husband, father, pastor and farmer, and they are reasons why as a wedding officiant he is so adept at dealing with brides and grooms amidst the sometimes hectic pace of a wedding."

Testimonials

"Rev. Meyer and I connected on a different level, too. I love that his day time job is running a farm preschool with his wife, and that he previously did teen counseling. He ran our rehearsal so smoothly, even with me changing my mind about things a few times. He was very patient and fit in with our family well. Our ceremony was beautiful, and all of our guests complimented it. Thank you so much!"

"Choosing the correct officiant for our wedding was of great importance to us, as the ceremony sets the tone for the whole event, in our opinion. Richard had come highly recommended to us, and at our first meeting we understood why. He was very natural; we could tell he had genuine interest in getting to know us and what we were looking for on our special moment and day. Over the coming months we corresponded quite regularly and met again to discuss further aspects to the ceremony that were unique to what we were looking for.
"He made several observations and recommendations that worked out perfectly. We could not have been happier with how everything turned out. Richard was such a vital part of creating that perfect outcome on what can be a hectic day. In fact, we have had numerous friends comment on how great Richard was in conveying who we were individually and what made our union so special as a couple. Thank you for making our wedding that much more special."

"Richard gave us an amazing ceremony. He incorporated our own personal themes and values into the service and we felt like we had a marriage ceremony that really represented us. Several guests said the ceremony 'was so Alex and Jonah.' We come from different religious and cultural backgrounds; using our input, Richard was able to create a ceremony that both sides of our family were very happy with.
"In addition, Richard's calm presence and thoughtfulness allowed us to enjoy our ceremony. He reminded us to take a deep breath, and to be mindful and deliberate. It can be a bit nerve-wracking standing in front of so many friends and family. Richard helped us to relax and enjoy our wedding so that we might actually be able to remember it in the future. We could not have been happier with the wedding ceremony that he officiated. I would recommend him to anyone."
Jonah & Alex

"We were very fortunate to work with Richard Meyer as our officiant on our wedding day. We found him to be an incredibly warm and genuine individual. He provided two consultations prior to the day of the ceremony, which were very helpful. Overall, he alleviated our concerns and worries about everything going smoothly, and the day of the ceremony went perfectly.
"Richard had a calming effect on both of us and made us comfortable with well-chosen words, readings, and the structure of the ceremony. We had many compliments from friends and family about how our ceremony was special and most memorable, and would highly recommend Richard Meyer for future ceremonies. Thanks again for being part of our special day."
Madelaine & Ryan

"We chose Richard Meyer to be our wedding officiant at our ceremony at Viansa Winery in Sonoma, California. Since we didn't know Richard before hiring him, we met him a month before the wedding so he could get to know us. He asked us a few questions and then asked us to send an email to him in the ways in which we love each other.
"We didn't know what each other wrote, and Richard surprised us with our love letters and thoughts during the ceremony. It was a great personal touch to a beautiful day in Wine Country. We would recommend Richard and we were very happy with his services."
Kendra & Chris

"Dear Richard,
"Thank you for everything; we are just starting to unwind from such a beautiful four days of family and celebration. Thank you for being part of it all, and for putting us at ease with the knowledge that such a high quality individual has administered our vows.
"Many, many of our guests have commented how much they enjoyed meeting you personally and how much they enjoyed the ceremony and how personal it felt. Thank you for your superlative recovery of the windy unity candle ceremony that has now provided us with a memory we will treasure! We would happily serve as a reference to any brides/grooms in the future."
Kate & David

"My husband and I had only a short time to plan our wedding before he deployed to Iraq. His family is from out of state, but we knew Sonoma County's Wine Country was the ideal spot for our wedding ceremony. We asked Reverend Richard Meyer to marry us, and despite short notice, he didn't hesitate.
"It was just our families and closest friends, but it was beautiful. Rev. Meyer worked with us on our vows, and even practiced with my husband so he wouldn't be so nervous. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. When we renew our vows we will definitely ask Rev. Meyer to officiate."
MaryBeth & Rudy

"I can recommend Richard very personally. He's my father, and a wonderfully sensitive, caring, thoughtful and accepting individual. I've witnessed him officiate wedding ceremonies for both of my sisters, and he did it with ease and just the right amount of emotional involvement. He's funny when appropriate, and yet understands the gravity of what he's doing, helping two people commit to each other wholly and completely in front of their loved ones.
"If you're looking for someone with vast experience who will take you seriously, help you relax and offer guidance and suggestions while following your lead, look no further."

What is a wedding officiant?
A wedding officiant, or wedding celebrant, is the person who performs the religious or secular ceremony for a wedding. Most wedding officiants are ordained clergy, though legal officials (such as judges), Justices of the Peace, marriage commissioners and notaries can also legally officiate weddings.

What is your experience?
I have been performing wedding ceremonies for 30 years, both religious and secular.

Why should I choose you to officiate my wedding?
Over the last 30 years I have conducted numerous wedding ceremonies of all sizes in a wide range of settings, from churches to beautiful outdoor settings. The couples I have served have had unique needs and desires for their ceremonies, and my goal for each is to perform the wedding they desire. I do not follow a standard routine or script. Instead, I work closely with each bridal couple to plan and execute a wedding ceremony that celebrates their love and their individuality. I promise the same to any couple I have to honor to serve in the future.

How far do you travel?
I can travel up to 100 miles from my home base of Santa Rosa, California. Additional travel fees may apply. Please don't hesitate to ask more.

Can you recommend wedding venues in the wine country?
I have experienced such diversity and beauty from Redwood forests to coastal landscapes to unmatched wine country venues. I can absolutely offer suggestions and recommendations on an individual basis.

Can you work with our wedding planner?
The majority of weddings I perform are managed by professional wedding planners, and like any member of a team I make it my priority to work within the scope and flow of how each ceremony is set up. A good wedding planner is the cornerstone to the success of your wedding, from beginning to end. No two weddings are the same, and I work with each couple, in harmony with their planner, to make their ceremony unique and memorable.

Can you officiate any day of the week or year?
I can be available to officiate your ceremony any time during the year.

Do you offer inter-faith, non-denominational or secular weddings?
In most cases couples come from differing backgrounds, and the ceremony often will reflect that diversity. What is said between two people and how it resonates with them is very important. I will emphasize freedom and flexibility when crafting your ceremony, whether it is a blend of religious backgrounds or completely secular.

Do you marry same-sex couples?
Yes, I consider it a privilege to participate in all weddings.

Getting married in Sonoma County

Will you meet with us prior to the wedding day?
I provide 2 pre-ceremony consultations. The first generally covers getting to know the couple and their backgrounds, size of bridal party and any specific components that they want to have incorporated in their ceremony. I will offer options for ceremony consideration and cover the key components of a ceremony from top to bottom. The second consultation brings it all together and solidifies plans.

Can you personalize a ceremony to our special needs?
No two ceremonies are ever the same. Each ceremony incorporates background and qualities unique to each couple. I will work with each couple to make sure their ceremony reflects their individuality and needs as a couple.

Can you officiate our wedding in a church or religious place?
Sonoma County Wine Country is a mecca for stunning outdoor wedding ceremonies, but I can also conduct a ceremony in a church, with approval.

Who handles the marriage license?
I do. As the wedding officiant solemnizing the wedding, I complete the license and mail it back to the county where it was issued. However, the bridal couple is responsible for obtaining a marriage license prior to the wedding.

How do we obtain a marriage license in the state of California?
Both parties must be present with valid picture identification (driver's license, passport or government/military ID). The license will remain valid for 90 days, and the ceremony must be performed within that time period.

Blood tests are no longer required in California.

The cost of a marriage license varies from county to county, and is dependent on type of license issued.

TWO TYPES OF MARRIAGE LICENSE:

General (Public) Marriage License - $83 in Sonoma County

- Marriage can be performed anywhere in California.
- Only one witness required. Witness does not have to be known to the bride and groom prior to the ceremony.
- License is a matter of public record, and the marriage is recorded at the county office that issued the license.

Confidential Marriage License - $100 in Sonoma County
- Parties must be living together as spouses.
- Both parties must be at least 18.
- Marriage must be performed in the county in which license was obtained.
- No witnesses are required.
- License is confidential.

Will I receive a certified copy of the marriage license after the wedding?
A certified copy of the registered license as proof of marriage may be required for legal purposes. A certified copy is not automatically issued; it must be requested from the County Clerk Office, and paid for after the ceremony is performed and the license registered. Cost for a certified copy of a marriage license in Sonoma County is $16.
